As those of you who read my Coffee Share may be aware, I was down at my cottage on Cape Cod over the weekend.  I was eating breakfast on Sunday morning, going over what I needed to do before I left when I noticed movement outside.

A quick note here before I continue.  Our cottage is the second cottage down the road.  There is a street just past the first cottage.  Across that street is a public landing out onto Swan Pond, a small brackish water body of water.  This is where I usually kayak.  Next to our kitchen table/dining area there is a glass sliding door that looks across our neighbor’s yard to the landing and onto the pond.

Seeing the movement in my peripheral vision, I turn and look out of the window.  There was a deer just right there.  It moseyed deeper into my neighbor’s yard.  I grabbed my camera, but the telephoto lens wasn’t on.  Oh well, I stuck my head out of the front door.  The deer was then in my neighbor’s parking area.  I took a couple of quick photos and then slipped back in to put on the telephoto lens.  I knew I didn’t have much time because I could hear voices coming up the street, and I could tell that the deer was listening to those same voices. I always tell you that I’m a stats nerd.  Well, in March my stats have been great.  Overall views for January and February were much lower than Jan. & Feb. 2016, but today I reached the most views ever for a month, the most visitors for a month (2017 has been better than 2016 so far) and have passed every month for “likes” except January 2016.  Remember, there is still almost a week to go for the month…

But that’s not all.  This week I gained two new countries!  One is odd, because it is one I thought I would have hit a long time ago.  I have most countries in the mid-east except Syria, Yemen, and Iran.  Until this week, I was also missing one of the US’s biggest friends over there, Jordan.  But someone from Jordan visited my page on two different days (or two people came by.) There are smiles big and small every day.  Talking to friends, family co-workers, acquaintances, etc.  Yes, these are all smile worthy and they occur almost every day.  Most days there are also smiles from strangers, which in turn make me smile.  There are the things my cats and dogs do.  The fact that my cat, Albert, has been sick but seems to be doing a lot better (had a vets appointment yesterday) is a smile (the getting better part).  I’ve mentioned reading and writing before.  Good food is a good one.  Good food with good company is better.  My last smile, Town Meeting, was big.  As was yesterday election.  So many other things.  I’m sure you smiled about something this week.  Something someone said or did.  Something you did.  Something that happened.

What I want to talk about is the return of warm weather. Continue reading

If you want democracy in its most pure form, sometimes you need to go to a small town.  Of course, there are a lot of times that we vote and have elections.  In my town, we have First in the Country Presidential Primaries every four years plus primaries for state offices every other year later in the year.  Then we have November elections every year and March elections for local offices every year.  Local and state issues can come up on ballet in either March or November.

OK, besides these formal elections, there are all types of meetings citizens can attend.  Budget meetings, Selectman Meetings, School Meetings etc.  There are two big School Budget meetings and in the end the people approve changes to the budget and vote it in.

The big meeting, though, is Town Meeting.  There are things in the town’s budget that we have to pay for.  These are discussed and approved in the series of meetings already mentioned.  And then there are outside and new things, as well as ideas, that are brought up every year, typically in the form of a warrant article.  There is usually between 20 and 30 of these. Work can be a bit strange because I never work face to face with anyone.  I go into the office twice a week (I telecommute the other three days), but I don’t work with anybody at the office.  Usually.  Also, through reorganizations, people changing positions as a normal part of their career, etc., it is easy to lose track of old coworkers. It has been beautiful and sunny here in New Hampshire!  OK, it has also been frigid, down around 3 F/ -16 C when I got up this morning.  That’s not including the very, very strong wind.  The high yesterday was around 18 F/ -8 C and ultra-windy.  I haven’t been this cold in years.  And it is almost the middle of March!

So the smile?  Yes. there are plenty of smiles.  Reading, editing and writing are all smiles.  But so is snuggling.  I’ve had a little cat on my lap all morning, and she is soft and warm.  I’ve posted this picture of her before, but just in case… Continue reading

I have mentioned a few times lately that I am in a writing phase.  There have been times in the past that I’ve been more prolific, writing the Halley Branch in less than a month comes to mind, but I have been writing quite a bit of fiction, not all of it making the pages of my blog.  A couple of things, though, stand out for this week.

A few stories have come up lately that remind me a lot of The Fireborn, the first (still unpublished) book that I wrote.  Last week I pulled out the 4th full draft, the latest, and did a quick read through.  I forgot how much I liked it!  I do need to brush up a few rough spots.  And then I will need to do some deep editing, sending it out for other eyes.  But in its present state, it is almost ready to go.  Of course I did do three major revisions and a half a dozen read-throughs in the year after I finished the first draft.  With all of that it had better be pretty close to being ready!  My current plan is to put it out in the late spring or early summer. Being sick the last week or so I have also been pretty  sedentary.  As time has gone on, though, I have tried to move more, mostly in the form of walks.

This afternoon I finally felt good enough to do my exercise routine.  I took ti easy, since it had been almost two weeks, but I did do the full dumbbell routine.  It is amazing how good I feel after exercise!  I understand why some people are so addicted to it.  Hope fully health and weather will come together so I can run again in a few days.

So, what made you smile this week? Write about it and post on the link-up (or click the little blue frog below). While you’re there, read what everyone else is smiling about! And come back to it later, if last week is any indication new smiles will be added daily!

Note – the weekly smile runs Wednesday Morning to Wednesday morning.  I post in the morning (Eastern US) and put up the link usually between 7 and 8 AM EST.  I also try to post on Sunday as a reminder.  People can and do join throughout the week.

This week I ran into a few people who were working with new web sites (new to them in one case).  I’ll talk about three, all three new beginnings in one way or another.

My sister decided to help out her local “affordable transport” and clean up their web site.  She contacted me with a Word Press question, and I gave her a little html lesson.  They wanted to spend money they didn’t have to make the site usable, but in a short time she made it much better.  Not perfect, maybe not even “professional”, but it works well for what it is.  Kind of cool.  (This may be helpful mostly to people in Vermilion, OH. – Vermilion Rides.) My smile is going to be a bit different today.  Why not? :)

I got up relatively early on Saturday (18th) morning.  The sun was just making an appearance and lighting my bedroom.  I went into the kitchen for my boring breakfast routine.  As I ate, I watched out the window, actually a sliding glass door.  From my kitchen table I can see Swan Pond just at the end of the road.  There is a landing, so the view of the water is unobstructed.

The day looked good.  There was barely a ripple on the pond, meaning there was little wind.  I hoped this was true all over the Cape (what we call Cape Cod).  Sometimes I will see little wind, but then going out it will be very strong where I want to walk.

I was out the door by 7:45 and headed to Chapin Beach. Continue reading
