The Weekly Smile for September 21, 2020 #weeklysmile

Over the last year or so I have had several smiles based around the wild animals I saw. For instance, one week a seal came close to my kayak to investigate and I got a few photos. Or what about seeing a bear up close and personal? There were osprey and baby hummingbirds and even a bobcat. This week carries on the tradition.

I was on Cape Cod at the end of last week. Friday started off wet and rainy. I took a walk right after the rain ended, so it was still grey and damp. As I was walking down the road, a little “dog” was trotting up towards me. I almost instantly realized what it was and stopped. I put my hands on my hips, which may have been a mistake, since it suddenly noticed me. The coyote (did you guess?) stopped and stared for a second before running through the yard next to me and back into the woods. Funny thing, to get to the woods it actually crossed the road to get closer to me, so I got a very good view.

I knew there were coyotes around. You can hear them yipping and occasionally howling late at night. I’ve also seen coyotes on a few occasions in the past, but usually at a distance. This was as close to one as I have ever been.

As when I saw the bobcat, I was a little surprised at how small it was. But then, both of them (bobcat and coyote) were around 40 lbs (18 kg), so not huge animals. I think of a coyote as being bigger than my my boxer, but my boxer weighs almost twice as much, so, no.

The Weekly Smile for the 14th of September, 2020 #weeklysmile

Hi! There were a few things to smile about this week, but I am going to use a strange one – chili. OK, those of you who have been reading my blog for a while may have seen this one before.

First, for those who didn’t see the earlier post on it, I belong to a CSA. That is “Community Supported Agriculture”. What that means is that I buy a share in a local (organic) farm in the winter. The farmer uses all of the seed money from the members who buy shares to support themselves as they get the fields ready, etc. During the summer I receive a basket of local produce every week. After giving share holders the choice of that week’s crops, the farmer sells the rest at local farm markets, etc. It is a great way to support local agriculture.

The Weekly Smile for 9/7/2020 #weekly smile

I took a week off of work last week. Reason enough to smile, no? But I will talk about kayaking. OK, I hear the yawns – when don’t I talk about kayaking? I will do something a little different today.

Most of the time I get out in the boat, I head up the river. The river is tidal, so I mean farther inland. There are some built up areas going inland, but there are also more wild areas. For the most part there are far few people. There are some brackish water ponds and coves and such to explore and watch wildlife, like this osprey with a needlefish.

The Weekly Smile for the 31st of August, 2020 #weeklysmile

Hi!  I hope you had a good week with plenty tyo smile about.  This week my smile is something completely new and different – time at Cape Cod.  Wait, I’ve done that before?.. ;)  Oh well, perhaps part 2 will be a little different.

Late last week and over the weekend I did a long kayak paddle, taking photos of osprey.  One had caught a needlefish that was almost 3 feet long (1 meter).  I took a long walk on a beautiful, deserted beach.  I took a long walk in the woods.  I swam in the ocean.  I did a lot of shorter walks.  I talked to neighbors.  It was good. The Weekly Smile for August 24, 2020 #weeklysmile

weeklysmile2b

Hi all.  This last week has been a pretty good for me.  I know looking at the world, well, not so good.  But, hey, that is what the weekly smile is about, isn’t it, to forget floods and fires for a minute or two.

As I said, I had a pretty good week, but nothing huge stood out.  OK, maybe one thing, the weather.  This has been a hot summer, much warmer than typical New Hampshire.  One thing about NH is that no matter how hot it is, we will usually have cool nights.  Not so much this year.  Until last week.
