The Weekly Smile 2/11/2019 #weeklysmile

My dogs love to play in our back yard.  There are a couple of relatively flat areas on different levels and then a steep, wooded area behind it all.  The run and play and play-fight and just have a great time.

It was really wet early in the week so I didn’t let them play much – they got so muddy so quick! But then the cold moved back in and the ground froze.

The boxer, Fiyero, loves to play with a ball.  Sometimes he wants to play with me with it, sometimes he just likes it close while he does other things, usually keeping a paw on it at all times.  But sometimes he plays on the hill. Some new paths have opened up an it was possible for the ball to roll down a path that descends more than 25 vertical feet (8 meters). Of course if he doesn’t stop it by then and it hits the drive, it might roll down another 5 clever feet into the church that’s next door neighbors to us. Continue reading

Hi!  Not a ton of smiles this week, but still some good ones :)

Besides the posts, occasionally people leave “smiles” in the comments.  Last week Charlotte Hoather had a great smile about the kindness of her singing instructor.

I will be posting this week’s weekly smile in a little over an hour.  I’m sure you all had something to smile about this week, from huge, like new houses or traveling half way around the world, or small, like a night out or a walk with the dog on a beautiful (if cold) day or even a timely pair of socks.

What made you smile? :)

I have a big smile this week.

Several years ago I decided that I would like to retire on Cape Cod.  About 6 years ago I bought a nice 4-season cottage and spend a lot of time there.  Well, even though retirement is still a few years out, we decided to buy the retirement house now.  We looked around for a while and finally found the perfect place.  It needs a lot of work, but has a ton of charm.  And since we won’t live here full time for a few years, we have time to update and modernize it.  Of course, update without getting rid of any of the charm!

It has been a painful process, worse than any other buying, selling, remortgaging, etc. that I’ve been through, and I’ve been through a few, but we finally closed on Friday.

Unless I win the lottery ;) , the cottage will go on the market in two or three months.  It is a great place, with a landing to Swan Pond about 100 yards/meters away.  I’ll miss it.  But this new place will be worth it in the long run, even if I don’t start every day on the Cape watching the sun rise over Swan Pond…. I will admit that the last few months have been a little stressful.  I can’t tell you everything, or even most of it, or at least yet, though hopefully I will have a smile about one of of the bigger ones soon. Most of it is actually good, or would be, even if unexpected, like having to buy a new car out of the blue (don’t ask). The problem has been that there were just so many different things, each which could be easily handled on its own, but taken together were huge.

I don’t say much about my job, except that I’m a computer nerd and a Program Manager and I work with dozens of web sites that get tens or even hundreds of millions of hits a day (one site alone gets over 2 terabytes of traffic a day). It’s up to me to keep the trains running, as it were… Well, I haven’t been doing that for the last month.  I won’t say why, but I’m sure most of you can guess. And missing two paychecks, well, it wouldn’t be so bad in a normal month, but as I said, I have a dozen other balls in the air, so, well, the end of this month has been a little stressful. If you follow my blog you have most likely seen quite a few photos from Cape Cod, though I have been awful about them lately – I have several thousand photos going back to June that I haven’t even looked at!  I don’t however, post many photos of the natural beauty of New Hampshire.

On Saturday I decided to get out of the house for more than just a long dog walk.  There is a trail close to my house that goes by three waterfalls.  the trailhead is a five minute drive, and the closest fall, Lower Purgatory Falls, is about a 10 minute easy hike from the trailhead.  I have written about the falls a few times  – my favorite is here (click if you want to see some of my best waterfall photos ;) ).  Saturday was cold and a storm was threatening, but it was worth it!  I only went about 15 or 20 minutes beyond the Lower Falls, but it was still a nice small hike (between 30 and 45 minutes).
