Me
And You
Our duty
For liberty
An obligation
Paid with our fathers’ blood
Yet no cost to perform it
To express our inner believes
To put our philosophy on line
To choose the direction of our country
I don’t understand why it is so hard
So many ignore this basic right
Some try to stop others from it
People feel bound by their chains
Stopped by constraints of time
Break those nasty chains
Open the door
And join me
Go out
Vote!

Written for Colleen’s Poetry challenge.  Each week she gives us two keywords, only we must use synonyms only, not the words themselves.  This week we were given free reign to chose our own words.  Mine were “Free” (including “freedom”) and  “Act” (including “take action”).  This week I chose a Double Etheree.

A lot of Americans talk about how great we are.  Sure, I get it.  If you push you may come up with a few answers as to why people think this is so.  “Freedom” always come up to the top.  Another one is our Constitution and our Democracy.  Well, if you are talking national level and state level, we are technically a Republic, but we all do get to vote for those who represent us in our Government.

The problem is, we don’t.

Truth is, Americans don’t vote.  There may be relatively big numbers (lower than many countries) for the presidential elections, but the numbers shrink going to midterm elections, shrink again for off year and shrink even farther for non-presidential primaries. Because of gerrymandering and the makeup of most primary voters, something like 5% of our country dictates what our Congress and most state legislators look like.  5%.  Not just 5%, but often the most extreme 5%.  That extreme 5% is who is in our Congress.  No wonder the divide is so huge!

Our biggest Freedom is the right to chose our leaders.  This is huge.  This is what we brag about, fairly or unfairly.  This is it.  Nothing is bigger.  Nothing.  When you say “I love America”, this is what you really mean.  Not one other thing matters without a vote. Not one.  Nothing.

And so few people take advantage of it, particularly where it counts, the primaries, elections where your vote counts much, much more than the presidential elections.

I know, it isn’t primary season.  But it is election season.  An important election.  Yes, the “midterm”.  But it is important for everyone to get involved.

OK, off of my soap box.  But as I am stepping down, I will repeat one more time:

Vote

(Another week to go.  I will post again ;) )

Get Out and….

White House

Wake up, sleepyhead
Put on your hat and coat
As I’m sure you know
Today’s a day of note
Grab whatever it is
You need to tote
And just get out
Get out and VOTE!

Yes, no sense of rhythm and silly rhymes, but you get the idea!  If you are a US citizen it is your civic duty to vote today.

Weekly Smile Week 6 #weeklysmile

Weekly Smile #WeeklySmile

Weekly Smile #WeeklySmile

This was a good week.  In fact, I’d say it was a very good week.  There were some downs, like shoveling snow, but there were some ups, like watching my dogs play in the snow.  They had a blast!  But there was little that made me say, “I need to post this as my smile!”  So I will do something a little different.

Playing in the snow

This week my smile was voting.

My guess is most people in the United States and quite a few people outside of the US know that this is a presidential election year.  They might also know that yesterday was the New Hampshire primary, the second election in the process and the first primary.   Living in New Hampshire I did my civic duty and voted. Baby Eagle and a parent

They want to buy the seats
That’s their view
If you don’t vote
It’ll come true
Despite their billions
They’ve just the same
Number of votes as you
So
Please vote!

If my international friends don’t know, today is election day in the US.  They say voter turnout will be historically low even though the money spent has been historically high.
