Masks

mask

I’ve been seeing tables showing the effectiveness, or ineffectiveness, of different types of masks on Facebook lately.  Some have been taking it the right way: A mask is not a “Get Out of Jail Free” card, you need to self-isolate, social distance, wash hands etc., etc even if you were a mask.

But then others ask, “Why bother?”

There are two reasons.

The first is simple: the mask helps to remind you to not touch your face and limits the places that your hand actually touches.  Just remember to consider your mask contaminated after you have been in public.

The second is much more complicated.

Every time you breath, you release a lot of water vapor in hundreds or thousands of tiny water droplets. These can hang in the air for hours and will settle on objects.  If you have the virus, those water droplets will have the virus.  This is the main way it spreads.  Sure, the mask won’t filter individual viruses, but it will stop a lot of water droplets.

Wearing a mask will help keep the virus inside of the mask and so away from other people.  Fool proof?  No.  Put on sunglasses with your mask and breath.  Yes, the glasses fog up.  Fog = water droplets….

Remember, you might have it at this time and not know it.

And if you don’t have it, the mask limits the amount of water droplets getting to your mouth and nose, thus into your respiratory system.  Is a mask foolproof?  No way.  Does it help?  Yes.

What this comes down to is that if everyone wore a mask and continued to wash hands, social distance, etc., it will put another layer in to slow the spread of the virus down.  It is not a magic bullet, but it is a big help.

Anyway, that is “why bother”!

I hope this helps.

Oh, and I hope nobody mistakes me for a gangster in my mask ;)

A Limerick for Our Times ;)

The Thinker

I often post poems and such in the comment section of other people’s blogs and very rarely repost them on my blog.  Yeah, often it is awful poetry on Chelsea’s Terrible Poetry posts, so I guess I can be excused for not claiming them.  Last week and again today I posted Limerick’s on Esther’s blog.  The more I thought about it, the more I liked one of today’s limericks, so I decided I need to put it here, on my own blog.  You know, take ownership of the bit of silliness…

Oh, in case you were wondering, yes, it is a bit adult in nature, but no named body parts ;)

So here it is, my Limerick for Our Times:

There once was a swinger from Bangalore
Who thought isolation a great big bore
Since sex with a stranger
Puts lives in danger
He couldn’t have fun anymore

I hope this caused a bit of a smile ;)

The Plan….

Mt. Katahdin

Many years ago I was at a gas station in Maryland.  I looked over at the beat-up pickup truck next to me and frowned. Hmm.  Maine plates.

“Hey,” I said, catching the driver’s eye.  “Why do you have a snow shovel tied to the front of your truck?”

He hunched over, slightly deflated.

“Dang,” he said.  “I hoped this was the spot, but nope…”

“What are you talking about?”

“Well, see here, after winter was over, I tied my snow shovel to the front of the truck and started south.  My idea is that the first time someone points to it and says, “what do you have there?” I will stop and put down roots, for I know I’d a done found my new home.”

These days I hear it is the other way around.

I’ve heard people from the northern points of Maine saying there are strangers in town asking if anybody knows anyone with the Corona virus.  Actually, they look at a map of where it is.  As soon as they find a place with no cases, they stop and put down roots.

A few trickling in already, you know there will be hoards in the near future.

Now, I’ve heard that there is a plan afoot.  Not going to say what it is, but if you suddenly hear of thousands and thousands of cases in places like Wyoming, Nebraska, North Dakota and, yes, northern Maine, well, let’s just say that it might be a bit exaggerated…

***

Yes, the first half is a very old joke.  The second half?

I have heard that people have already started to move to places like northern Maine to escape the virus.  Really.  Hmmm.

Anyway, this was supposed to be a bit of humor, but maybe will become reality… I mean, I have been hearing a lot of little white lies from the top all of the way down, so why not this?

Hope you got a small chuckle, anyway…

Walking the Dog in 2020 – A Cartoon

Dog-walk-2020

Dog Walking, 2020

Yesterday when I had Idina and Fiyero out for a walk I saw someone coming towards me with their dog.  I changed directions and took a side street.  Sure, it might have been OK, but Idina sometimes acts like a mad thing, particularly if the other dog is a female. But as I walked the other way, I started to think about Social Isolation and its effects on dog walking in 2020.  I hope you got a smile from this little cartoon :)

(Note – I just posted a slightly tweaked version of the cartoon)
