New Year? #nonet #doublenonet

The conductor bows, raises his hands
Music flows from the orchestra
Curtains of darkness raises
Fire lights the world’s stage
The sun lifts its head
Shadows depart
New Day
Are you there?
The days lengthen
Lonely night shortens
Is it getting better?
Is the darkness really gone?
Has the new year really commenced?
Will unfolding life really improve?

Written for Colleen’s Poetry challenge.  Each week she gives us two keywords, only we must use synonyms only, not the words themselves.  This week the key words were “Begin” and “Fresh” This week I decided to try a nonet.  Well, no I decided to try a double nonet :)

Yes, I am finding darkness in light ;)  The first half was just too boring, so…

Dawn of a New Year #tanka #haibun

Dawn of a New Year

I am walking alone down a dark path.  The pale December sun fails to illuminate, casting a cold, golden sheen over the land.  I pause and look out over the world.  Stark shadows, crisp lines prove that summer is a distant memory.  As are you.  They say the new year brings new light and new hope.  I smile, knowing that although colder days are ahead, the light will increase and warmth will return.

Shadows in pale light
Darkness of the dying year
You, my sun, are gone
A new year brings much more light
Perhaps it brings you as well

Written for Colleen’s Poetry challenge.  Each week she gives us two keywords, only we must use synonyms only, not the words themselves.  This week was a “free week” where we could choose our own words.  My two words were “illumination” and “return”.  This week I went with a tanka and a haibun.

Happy New Year!  (The photo was taken on Saturday in Harwich, MA.)

A Review of 2017

The end of the year and the new year’s celebration are often a time of reflection.  Strangely, I haven’t been doing much this year.  But now that I sit down and force myself to think about my life in 2017, it is pretty interesting.

Since I bought the cottage on Cape Cod I haven’t been traveling much.  I can’t afford to!  And yet when I look back…  In 2017 I visited family in Ohio and Maine.  I had a business trip to DC.  I also spent some time in Colorado.  I love mountains :)  Of course i spent a huge amount of time on Cape Cod. Looking back
Where I have been
Looking forward to
Where I will go
The short cold days
The long dark nights
Cause reflection
Looking into the gathering light
Of a new year
I ask
How can I make the best of this
Newborn time
How can I be a better person
In the coming year?

Happy New Year!

Weekly Smile 52! (Part 4) #weeklysmile

Weekly Smile #WeeklySmile

Weekly Smile #WeeklySmile

A lot of bad things happened in 2016.  There was a rise in extremism, terrorism, nationalism, populism, racism, and just about every other negative type of “ism” out there.  Some people had more need than ever before while others not only were indifferent to the need but actively tried to hurt those in need.  Hate became commonplace.  And I won’t even get into celebrity deaths.  Some people have said it was the worst year ever.  I think they are forgetting the darkest parts of WWII, the worst years of the Black Plague or “The Year of The Comet” when 90% of life on Earth was wiped out.

OK, OK, I know the year was pretty bad, but for the most part it was pretty good for me personally. Continue reading

A Smile A Day – Day 27 – Reflection

Swans in Mill Pond, Milford, MA

It’s that time of year again.  We all sit and look back at what the previous year brought us.  We look at what we achieved and where we failed.  We look at the good and bad.  New friends and the passing of friends and family.  We take stock in where we have been and we we are.

Over all 2015 was good to me.  I visited with family and made new friends.  Many of the friends I made are right here, in blogland, the blogsphere, or whatever this is called.  My job went well and I was in good health through most of the year.So all in all, a very good year.  Sometimes we do need to look back with rose-tinted glasses and concentrate on the good, but this is a time I don’t have to.

So I look back and smile.  Thank all of you for helping with that smile : )  I hope you’re smiling too.  Happy New Year!

The Cold Wind of the Old Year

Alone on the beachThe cold wind
Rushes past
Taking the old year away
But the new year
The dreamy future
Is still only a hope
A sunny glimpse
A wish
In the summer
I was warmed
By your heart’s embers
But the old year’s wind
Blows the memory away
Till I know not
If the heat was real
Or just imagined
The cold wind
Of the old year
Washes clean the slate
For the warm new year
To write its memories
With red hot pen
On my heart
I listen to the wind
As I watch
For your warm writing
To rekindle
My fire Continue reading
