Hi all, there has been a lot to smile about over the last week. Right now I am smiling because this heatwave is coming to an end ;) Also there is that huge anniversary of the Moon landing – I’m a space nerd, so that is huge. There are other things personally, like walks in the woods, kayak paddles, watching hawks fight, a flock of turkey, etc. But I will pick something very strange – a haircut.
For most of my life I have worn my hair relatively long for a male. Lately, however, it has been getting just a little unwieldy. I didn’t mind the Beethoven hair jokes, but after the second or third “ma’am”, well, time for a haircut….
Here is before:
Here is after:
Not great photos (squinting into the bright light!), both selfies, but perhaps you can see the difference in length. In ways I like the long hair better, you know, that 70s rock star vibe, but truthfully I am very glad I got it cut.
My smile this week is getting a much needed haircut.
What made you smile?
****
A reminder that since i was out and missed last week’s smile, there is no smile recap. There will be one next week :)
***
Come on, I’m sure you smiled at least once last week. Why don’t you share it? I hope you can join in!
Here is list of “rules” and guiding ideas. If you don’t have time to read it right now, just remember that this is an exercise to spread positivity. Don’t smile about the misfortune of others. Don’t smile in a way to excludes others. Make sure a 12 year old can read it.
And remember, the Smile can be anything, large or small. Nothing, nothing at all is too small for a Smile! Sometimes taking time to notice those small, every day smiles is more important than those once in a lifetime huge ones :)
To join in, write a post to share your smile and then leave a comment on this post with a link to your smile. Or, if you prefer, do a pingback to this post (pingback = have a link from your post to this one) (Note – pingbacks have been very inconsistent – please leave a comment :) ). You can post any time until next Sunday evening (to be simple, I will say midnight GMT, which is 7 PM Sunday for me). Next week I will compile all of the Smiles and do a separate post of them on Monday morning just before the smile. (I will shoot for around 7 AM EST).
Try to use the hashtag #WeeklySmile when you use Twitter or other social media that uses hashtags. I searched Twitter and found that #weeklysmile had been used only a handful of times back in 2012 and 2013. It hasn’t been used since. So it’s ours! I also registered it on Twubs.
You can use the graphic at the top. It is the official graphic for the event.
Now go out there and find something to smile about! :)
Your hair looks thicker shorter I like it 😊

Thanks, Charlotte. It’s grown out quite a bit already (this was from a month ago), so I may need to get it cut before it looks like the top photo ;)

I like them best, but shorter is better in that scenario.

I think most prefer the shorter – the long hair was just a bit unruly….

I come from the long haired rock star era. I love long hair on some men. I love the bald look on some men as well. My son, early 30’s likes his head shaved bald and I love it. I hate it when it starts to grow in and he hasn’t shaved it in a while.

awe – you have a kindness to your face -t he smile and the eyes
and I really like the short look better – it is trim and just polished
—
\and side note – I am growing my hair out right now – it takes so long – I was short for many years now… we shall see how it goes

Thanks, Y! It disliked how unruly the long hair was more than the actual length, though it was longer than it has been in years. If you let your hair grow very long you’ll have to do comparison photos.

Yeah – maybe I will do the comparison photo 1 you are braver than I am!
But this week it has been frustrating because it could use a trim – and I guess we can get trims and not full Cuts while growing out an old style – but I quite simply miss how easy extra shirt hair can be – so even when I go a little longer it will not be short long (and definitely no extensions- ha)
Oh and at least you have so much natural hair – that is a gift – some folks lose theirs

I did notice in your recent “selfie” that you really couldn’t be seen ;) Trims are allowed as you grow it out, but you are right, not as easy to take care of. I do feel lucky to still have hair, though it is tinning up top (like a monk) – one problem with short is that it is easier to notice that thinning because nothing is covering it ;)

actually my selfie had more than i usually share- lol – and i am just not into sharing a bunch of pics online- but do want to share a few here and there (and i think you have a good balance and never at all do too much- cos some can overdo it) because it helps us bond and it is fun to share- so i do try and throw some pics out there – but also way to be true to my style and i’m not going to force it if i don’t eagerly want to do it – ya know?
and didn’t notice the thinning —

I get it with the photos. There are a photo blogs that I follow and I enjoy them. And there are others that share quite a few photos and it works. But some non-photo blogs do force it a bit and, like you, I don’t want to be one of them. But I do enjoy your photos, so keep them coming.
If you were 5 inches taller than my and looking down, you’d see thinning. Or when my hair is wet. A few other times may be noticeable. I do wear a hat when outside (fedora) so I don’t get sun burn….

hats have so much value – eh?

and balance in blog posts is so hard at times –
for some of us at least –
and I find that I have seasons of needing to check in on “balance” for what my needs are at a time. And last year I might have overpacked some posts – and maybe I was feeling like I did not want a bunch of short posts and would rather have a long one.
but it backfired –
like as a writer you know that too long of a complex sentence can be tough for a majority of readers. And some of my least favorite writers are the ones that cannot write clear and with what is “simplex” – which means simple sentences but they know how to weave in the complex that way –
and so some of my posts (see this in hind sight and from feedback) were like that really long sentence or packed chapter – blah….
and so now…
I know which “challenges” to NOT combine in a post (because the hosts don’t appreciate it and would prefer a single one for their entry – and side note – I like how you and Deb don’t mind when we combine the #smile and her #one word sunday)
I also know that I still need to be true to my mood at the time.
If I am feeling like a post with 2,000 words –
or if I write a 100 word fiction and then want to expound with 900 – it is my perogative and there might be three people interested – and the complainers can go (and continue reading the posts they can speed read through as it fits their needs at that time – ya know)
and so recently – with my recent Pegman entry – I felt completely balanced in my “author notes” – not caring about length because I blog for me – and if I start trying to people please – and think “oh I can’t add too much because so and so ripped into me for such a long post script” – well I lose – and the handful of readers who want a long post script also lose.
And so after taking a long (unplanned pause) from flash fiction – I was pleasantly surprised with the ease that came with my posts.
Be me.
Write from my heart and passion.
and share what I want to – not for more views – but because it is what is on my mind and it is what I genuinely want to share.
oh – but I did ad a note – a little sarcastic – just saying that “if this next section is too long – to skip it”
–
I love honest feedback and am not slamming the ones who had those heavy comments – because they actually helped me grow – ya know – but then it helped me see what I need to do for me – and that is my goal –
and so with all that – where are you with your balance. I know you have shared about it before – and I have enjoyed it – but you stay pretty consistent – eh?

I like to go where the whim takes me on posts and posts length. Some of my fiction goes way too long ( how many people read a 4000 word blog post?!), but then I counterbalance with short ones, so… Anyway, yeah, I get what you are saying. Honest feedback is good. I do stay pretty consistent. I have ups and downs, but try to keep going most of the time. Early July I missed about a week blogging, which is good.

yeah – not many will want to read 4,000 word – but some will and some will bookmark it and come back-
and too idea to balance it out

Short hair will be cooler during this hot hot summer…and besides..it grows back, so why not get it cut! Plus it looks good either way, so there’s a win/win.

Thanks. yes, it is a little cooler. It was pretty unruly, so I am glad I did get it cut. If I let it grow out again, I’ll do it in stages so ti isn’t quite as messy.

Shorter hair is definitely more manageable! Enjoy your time outside Trent now that the heatwave is over.

It is much more manageable. It started raining at 11 AM yesterday and has been pouring ever since. The ground is so soggy that several large trees have fallen! So hopefully I can enjoy outdoor time again soon ;) I hope you have a good week :)

Hi Trent! I agree the landing on the moon anniversary was super exciting! There were a lot of good articles everywhere about space in general the past couple of days and I love it!
Also the haircut looks great! I bet it felt very refreshing! I hope you have a great upcoming week!

I’ve also been enjoying all of the articles about the Moon mission and space in general that have been coming out. I think people are getting more excited about space again, which I think is a good thing.
Thanks about the haircut. It is refreshing. I also don’t have to brush the hair out of my eyes any more ;)
I hope you have a wonderful week :)

Great to have you back in blog land!
With that shirt I don’t think I wouldn’t call you a ma’am, but i have to admit, I like the shorter haircut on you:) In this weekly post the doughnut tower of course brought the smile! https://wp.me/p9EWyp-14d

lol. I was running and a dog came out after me. the owner called it back and shouted, “Sorry, ma’am!” So a different shirt and not fitting so oddly since I was kneeling on hot asphalt when I took the selfies ;) Thanks! This comment didn’t get lost in spam-land like the last one. I will go over and check out the doughnut tower :)

Sorry, after my exhibit in the art show, 7 hrs. South, I have been moving very slow in blogland! Someone calling you ma’am must have been a weird experience!
