The Weekly Smile 5/13/2019 #weeklysmile

weeklysmile2a

Note – Pingbacks have not been working.  If you write a smile, please leave the link in the comments below.

I am going to write two quick smiles this week.  Why?  because I can :)

The first is about formatting.  I have published four books using Amazon’s KDP.  It seems that I always have to fight with Word to get things working correctly and then with KDP to make it all work.  Last week I took my book of two novellas and formatted it.  Page numbers in all of the sections worked how I wanted.  The sections worked how I wanted.  Everything worked.  I will admit that I think Word was updated – it looks different.  It is possible they fixed whatever was making it not work before.  And then, to top it off, it loaded into KDP in record time and looked great.  I ordered a proof copy of the paperback, and it all works.  So a big smile.

The next smile is Spring.  After a few weeks of cold rain, we had a few warmer days and actually saw the sun.  Yes, that big yellow thing made a rare appearance!  I made it outside a few times and had some nice walks.  It was great to actually enjoy some Spring weather!

My smiles this week were getting the formatting perfect with no pain at all and enjoying some Spring sunshine and flowers.

What made you smile?

****

Come on, I’m sure you smiled at least once last week.  Why don’t you share it?  I hope you can join in!

Here is list of “rules” and guiding ideas.  If you don’t have time to read it right now, just remember that this is an exercise to spread positivity.  Don’t smile about the misfortune of others.  Don’t smile in a way to excludes others.  Make sure a 12 year old can read it.

And remember, the Smile can be anything, large or small.  Nothing, nothing at all is too small for a Smile!  Sometimes taking time to notice those small, every day smiles is more important than those once in a lifetime huge ones :)

To join in, write a post to share your smile and then leave a comment on this post with a link to your smile.  Or, if you prefer, do a pingback to this post (pingback = have a link from your post to this one) (Note – pingbacks have been very inconsistent – please leave a comment :) ).   You can post any time until next Sunday evening (to be simple, I will say midnight GMT, which is 7 PM Sunday for me).   Next week I will compile all of the Smiles and do a separate post of them on Monday morning just before the smile.  (I will shoot for around 7 AM EST).

Try to use the hashtag #WeeklySmile when you use Twitter or other social media that uses hashtags. I searched Twitter and found that #weeklysmile had been used only a handful of times back in 2012 and 2013. It hasn’t been used since. So it’s ours! I also registered it on Twubs.

You can use the graphic at the top. It is the official graphic for the event.

Now go out there and find something to smile about! :)

“There are days I go in search of the kind, compassionate, loving and beautiful. Despite what we sometimes see on the news, FB and elsewhere, there is much more beauty in the world than ugliness, much more kindness than hate or cruelty. Perhaps we should all have a goal to make at least one person smile every day.”

I smile every time I get to turn down the heat! I’m cold all the time. But we have heating pads. I am deeply, joyously grateful for (in order):

    Sweat pants
    Red Sox sweat shirt
    Sweaters
    Down comforters
    Heating pads.

Otherwise, it’s all mud and backaches.

Hi T – I noticed word was acting up and so that would make sense if an improvement was underway –
Congrats on another project and glad the formatting was smooth.
I might be able to post a smile post /
But I will mention it here just in case I don’t get to it –
Baby birds in the gutter again/ and annoyed they are there but nkwnis the time they bring joy with their sounds –
Just hope there is not damage done – our neighbors had a dryer fire last year – two weeks after a service company removed briefs from their gutter and attic area – so they thought it was all good – well the fit department put out the small fire and then removed a lot of leftover nest debris – it was crazy how much the company had missed – so anyhow – fingers crossed things are okay – and enjoying them for now

Hope the birds nest don’t cause too much damage, but still cool to be part of their lives. A few weeks back my dog uncovered a rabbits nest in a pile of leaves in my back yard at the cottage on Cape Cod. I was about to rake… They didn’t even have their eyes open, so I expect I would have killed them. The dog was gentle, so I’m sure there are a few baby rabbits hopping around because of her :)

Word Press has been giving me fits, and yes, there was an upgrade there, but Word has stayed unchanged on my computer until a little over a week ago when it upgraded. Not sure why, but glad it did get upgraded….

Oh that is special to hear about the rabbits – and as I type I can hear the little birdies in their nest – and it is even more special because someone we know passed away – (definitely share the story later) but new life always helps wither death is the topic of the week –
And when my nephew passed away in 2017 there were little birds in a different area of the gutter and it led to some of the poems in my avian friends book (and I need to send you a copy of it)

Yeah, the writing part is fun. The editing part, not so much fun. Final proofing a terror. Formatting – Stephen King can’t write anything as scary ;) I’m not sure why this time it went so well and so easy.

I’ll be by to visit in a few minutes. Thanks for the link – I’m still not getting many pingbacks.

I am glad that your formatting worked so well. I can’t get my Word to format my manuscript. It is partway done, but not working correctly. I don’t know if it is me or it because to be honest I don’t know a lot about formatting in Word. I wasn’t really planning on publishing it the standard way anyhow so publishing it on my blog gives me a lot of leeway to set it up how I want it to be. No one can tell me how it has to be done and I don’t need page numbers necessarily. I just post a chapter as a section or a page.

I’m getting about 1/4 of the ping backs, and for some reason I got yours this time. Thanks for leaving a comment too :)

In the past I fought with Word because it never did what I thought it was supposed to do. Technically, Word is a word processor, and Microsoft wants people to buy Publisher for formatting. But still… As I said, I think I somehow got an update, because everything changed. Yeah, publishing on the blog does give you a lot more leeway. If you study it, you can do some pretty subtle editing in Word Press. When I’ve done things in chapters, I’ve set up a page to act as table of contents with links to the chapters. If it can be in any order, you don’t need a navigation system on the posts, but I also have done navigation on the posts.

Have fun with it and good luck!

I have found that if I just put a link in the comments it won’t post anything. This is new.

I haven’t used word for a very long time and not this version to be sure. The layout and help files stink. If I publish on the blog it is not that big of a problem. Still working on the layout.

I usually hate formatting, so it was great that it was so simple this time. I divided the book into five sections with two different page numbering systems, and it worked exactly how I wanted first try.

Cold and wet again today, but the sun and warm will be back later in the week. :)

Glad that formatting thing worked out! I hate technical stuff and if it doesn’t work I give up too easily. Sometimes I don’t try something new at all out of fear of not understanding how to do it. I should give myself more credit…but it’s hard.

Spring here is still cold and rainy. Again today it is in the high 30s with rain. I need to be weeding the gardens but it’s so dreary and cold that I don’t go out. I got the yard mowed in a window of a couple hours when it was only drizzling a little…and noticed my forget-me-nots and bleeding heart are in bloom! I would have missed them by staying in. Katie and I need to get out and explore the yard soon.

Even though last week was very nice, yesterday was cold and wet – it did reach 50 for a couple of hours in the afternoon. Today is a little warmer (low 50s), but still pretty dreary, and tomorrow will be wet and cold again. But then it warms back up to the upper 60s and sun for the second half of the week. Just odd weather all around….

Formatting is often frustrating because there doesn’t seem to be any logic to how Word acts. Well, this time it acted exactly how it was supposed to. I know Word isn’t publishing software, but it does have those options, so why don’t they work? Well, as I said, everything changed, so they must have made it work in the latest revision. You are right that doing the technical side is not the funnest part of writing.

I hope the weather improves to that you are able to get out more!

Hugs to you Dawn. I’m camping in eastern WA at the moment and it’s supposed to be HOT here … but it’s 64 degrees and very gently raining … and it was 45 degrees two nights ago (more blankets!). Still, the rain makes everything so green here, when usually it’s bone dry. Life goes up and down eh? You’ve been around the barn enough to know that life does come back up, but still … sometimes life is just down. Hugs from me here in Yakima, WA … thinking of you.
