In late winter I often see deer in my backyard. More often I see signs that deer have been around. Unfortunately, so do the dogs – they think the deer left those “treats” just for them! Anyway, the other do I was upstairs and looking out of the window. A car stopped as it was coming down our street. I saw three deer run in front of it into the yard across the street from our house. The car crept down the road and before it reached the end, five deer ran in front of it again, this time heading back towards the woods again.
Deer are pretty common, but I still think it is great when I see them out of my window. The picture below is from a few years ago, but was taken out of my window – the dogs were actually just below them when I took this!
And a year before I took that photo, I saw deer in my back yard every day as I left for work and and I decided to draw a picture of one –
My smile this week was about seeing deer roaming my neighborhood.
What made you smile?
****
Come on, I’m sure you smiled at least once last week. Why don’t you share it? I hope you can join in!
Here is list of “rules” and guiding ideas. If you don’t have time to read it right now, just remember that this is an exercise to spread positivity. Don’t smile about the misfortune of others. Don’t smile in a way to excludes others. Make sure a 12 year old can read it.
And remember, the Smile can be anything, large or small. Nothing, nothing at all is too small for a Smile! Sometimes taking time to notice those small, every day smiles is more important than those once in a lifetime huge ones :)
To join in, write a post to share your smile and then leave a comment on this post with a link to your smile. Or, if you prefer, do a pingback to this post (pingback = have a link from your post to this one). You can post any time until next Sunday evening (to be simple, I will say midnight GMT, which is 7 PM Sunday for me). Next week I will compile all of the Smiles and do a separate post of them on Monday morning just before the smile. (I will shoot for around 7 AM EST).
Try to use the hashtag #WeeklySmile when you use Twitter or other social media that uses hashtags. I searched Twitter and found that #weeklysmile had been used only a handful of times back in 2012 and 2013. It hasn’t been used since. So it’s ours! I also registered it on Twubs.
You can use the graphic at the top. It is the official graphic for the event.
Now go out there and find something to smile about! :)

“There are days I go in search of the kind, compassionate, loving and beautiful. Despite what we sometimes see on the news, FB and elsewhere, there is much more beauty in the world than ugliness, much more kindness than hate or cruelty. Perhaps we should all have a goal to make at least one person smile every day.”

We either spot the deer far in the woods, or they are suddenly standing in the middle of the road and you are standing on your brakes! I suspect our deer population has been hard hit by the coyotes. There have been an awful lot of them and they are hungry. We have too many predators and not enough prey to keep them all fed. We used to have a lot of rabbits and chipmunks and squirrels. Then came the Bobcats and the Fishers. Then there was a big upsurge in the coyote population. And there are also eagles and hawks and they are hungry too. The squirrels are looking pretty beat up. My son pointed out that they are now more or less the bottom of the food chain, not counting the mice which prefer to live in OUR house.
I suppose this will all balance out. The problem is there are so few wild areas remaining and this is one of them. We keep pushing the creatures out of their homes and now we have bears in our woods. It’s not such a big woods that we can house quite this many animals.

Typically over time it balances out, as long as we humans don’t interfere too much. In the past (talking my lifetime) there were too few predators and so there was a huge overpopulation of deer and rabbits and such. That’s why you used to see them all of the time. Now they are more hidden, they way they are supposed to be. But then, as you say, we are expanding and pushing them out everywhere. Where will they go?
Funny, but I actually see more wildlife in the more densely places on the Cape where i stay than the fringes of civilization in New Hampshire where I live most of the time. I think its because it is more wild so the animals can stay farther away from people.

Yes … so well said … deer are common, but there is still a special feeling seeing them.

I’m not sure about your area, but the part of Ohio were I grew up they were super common, but I never tired of seeing them.

Oh … they are plenty throughout the state … even in the metro areas!

Hmmm, I’m not sure I’d smile if I saw deer in my garden. They are wonderful to observe but i understand they are a nightmare for gardeners as they eat the plants. I used to see deer in the woods where I used to ride my horse. We could get really close before they smelt human presence and run away. They are beautiful animals.

I typically only see them down in our yard in late winter, so not too bad for the garden, though a few years ago when we had a very harsh winter they ate all of our shrubs and ornamental trees. We still have several inches of snow on the ground here… Yeah, I know some people think they are pests, but I still like to see them.

You’re an excellent artist. I remember your drawings and had it developed into your book cover. The deer reminds me of our Japan trip in Nara Deer Park, January this year.
Here is my big smile.

Thanks. For a while I tried to do a new drawing at least once a week for the blog. I need to do that again… I used one of my drawings for The Halley Branch and am planning on using another on for my upcoming two fantasy novellas book.
I’ll stop by in a minute for your smile, but looking at the title, I can guess ;)

I love seeing the deer roaming about my forest. Great photo, Trent, and lovely drawing. My smile – getting my taxes done!

Oh, getting taxes done. A reminder to me – our CPA comes to our home to do it. I always have a complete spreadsheet for him. He just copy the numbers on his form. I’m behind schedule!!

I’m going to be traveling to see my parents, so I had a deadline. Such a relief to have it done, MIriam. Hope yours go well. :-)

Probably live at a higher altitude – we see deer throughout the year, and they’re getting used to my camera:) My first time here – do you allow a super short story & image combined with other challenges?

I’m down in a village, so I think the deer don’t risk being that close to the houses unless they have to. On the other hand, maybe they do and I just don’t see them…
I don’t have a problem combining posts with other challenges. Typically I like to keep it to something that happened, that you read, that you saw, something you are doing, etc., but I guess if you read or wrote a story that made you smile, that would work. I have posted music I recorded, so a story isn’t that far off…

Seeing deer isn’t common for me and it always elicits a squeal of delight when I do. To see so many from the comfort of your own home would be amazing!! I was smiling just reading about it 💕

We don’t see many except right around this time of year. They seem to get closer into town (village) as the winter comes to an end. I don’t actually see them often, mostly just the prints and what my dogs think is candy ;)

Great weekly smile, Trent! I bet the person driving the car is happy that they saw the deer while driving!! (I heard that it’s worse for the car than the deer if you hit one.)
Beautiful smile. Beautiful drawing. Thank you!
Blessings,
Debbie

The driver wouldn’t be able to go very fast on this road and so may not have been a problem, but I’m sure he/she was surprised, particularly the second time it happened! Yeah, not a good thing to hit a deer, though not as bad as hitting a moose…
Thanks :) I’ll go check out your post in a few minutes.

Hmm… I had a very busy and productive week last week. Did a whole lot of cleaning around the house. I don’t know if that made me smile, exactly, but it felt pretty good when it was done.

A productive week does often give a sense of accomplishment, which can be a smile – particularly if all the hard work was last week and so now done ;)

And I almost thought you were going to say the car hit the deer on the second time they crossed in front.
But that would not fit the smile

Nope, that would not be a smile! Unless I hated deer ;) A few years ago it was a super harsh winter and the deer ate all of my shrubs and ornamental trees and such. To me, let them. I’m sure they needed those plants more than I did…

That is sweet of
You to say they can eat it all.
I love our deer friends and appreciate their beauty – like you do – but I have a side of me that gets worried when I hear the word deer come up. There are the gifs they carry – there are the cars that hit them (and I know we are often carving into their habitat) and then there are folsk with “Bambi Complex” –

Yeah, we are at the epicenter of Lyme, so I know about some of those gifts they carry… Not starry eyed about them, but do really like them being around (despite the ticks).
