Can You Spare Some Change This New Year? – #tanka

Eagle at steep pitch

I offer some coins
Towards my evolving desire
The unknown future
I strive to win my intent
But will I lose you instead?

All ahead is fog
What are my aspirations?
I alter my course
This new path will not falter
To search out my fondest dreams

This was written for Colleen’s Weekly Poetry Challenge.  The key words today were “Ambition” and “Change”.  Following her suggestion, I didn’t use the words, I used only synonyms.

I was about to publish the first, but wasn’t sure.  I wrote the second and don’t like it much better.  Hmmm…  Oh well, I hope you enjoy!  The photo at the top?  No, it doesn’t go with either poem, but I like it ;)  It’s a red-wing blackbird, chasing an eagle as the eagle does a wild maneuver to both avoid the blackbird and to hunt.  It caught a fish a few seconds later!

Thanks! I often get caught up in the syllable count and sometimes don’t think about other parts of the form. Of course, if you put the two little poems together into one, it does come out more free form.

If I sit and write a poem, I almost always do free form, which is one reason I enjoy the challenges. Even if I don’t hit the form perfectly, it makes me think about it.
