Although the Depression put a damper on the Harlem Renaissance, the music scene continued to flourish. Chick Webb’s house band at the Savoy took on all comers and was only beaten for “greatest swing band” by Duke Ellington.
Thinking of Ellington, when he invited Billy Strayhorn to visit him in his house in Harlem for the first time, part of his written directions where to take the A train. The rest is history….

The image at the top is actually from 1958. It is a photo a lot of jazz greats from the 30s through the 60s. I posted a story about a documentary about the photo shortly after the great Horace Silver passed away – he was one of the last survivors of the day the photo was taken.
