Stars

The ship was quiet.

“Where is everyone?” Captain Martins switched from one camera to the next.  Nothing.  The only unmonitored but accessible place was the observation deck.

Wondering why all nine crew members would be stuffed in there, she made her way forward.

She moved Lt. Chen aside to enter.

The stars, still despite the ships extraordinary speed, greeted her.  She was puzzled.  Everything seemed normal.  Why the blank expressions?

As she watched, the stars moved, resolving into the streets of home.

“Close the blast shields!” she said, but it was too late; her mind was sucked into the void.
