Bio Blurb

Trent

I am playing around with different “bio blurbs” for my Amazon Author’s page.  After writing a few little biographical sketches I decided to look up a few famous authors on Amazon to see what they put as their author’s bio blurb.

So the first one I looked at was Neil Gaiman.  Here is what he had to say:

“I make things up and write them down. Which takes us from comics (like SANDMAN) to novels (like ANANSI BOYS and AMERICAN GODS) to short stories (some are collected in SMOKE AND MIRRORS) and to occasionally movies (like Dave McKean’s MIRRORMASK or the NEVERWHERE TV series, or my own short film A SHORT FILM ABOUT JOHN BOLTON).

In my spare time I read and sleep and eat and try to keep the blog at www.neilgaiman.com more or less up to date”

I don’t want to copy from anyone, but after reading this I decided that if he can get away with that, perhaps I can get away with my first idea.  What do you think?

I never decided what I wanted to do when I grew up.  I compose and play music, draw and paint, take a lot of pictures, and yes, I write.  I’ve written a couple of books that are sitting on my shelf waiting to go out and I write a new short story almost every week, which I often post on my blog, trentsworldblog.wordpress.com.  I’ve collected some of the best short stories I’ve written and put them out as “Seasons of Imagination”.

I also like to eat, so I work as a computer nerd during the day while I figure out what it is I really want to do.

Or do I have to be famous to do something like that?

Anyway, I was doing a selfie-photo shoot with my good camera.  The picture at the top is not the one I want to use, I’ll save that for later, but was something I did on the first day.  I decided to wait for better morning light to continue.  I was right, the light was much better.  I also had some portrait pointers after showing this one off.

I like your first idea. It’s really difficult to come up with a personal blurb like that. You want it to be you and you want it so tell something about you and you want it to not be boring. This one fits all of those.

As far as pictures go use natural light like in a doorway or near a window is always good. Use the one that lets in the best morning light with you facing that light. Watch out for what is behind you. If you go outdoors find shade but use the edge of the shade looking towards the light but not so your squinting you can side light yourself that normally works well. Umbrellas can even make good shade if you need them to. I prefer morning light over evening light due to the color of the light. Good Luck.

The picture I’m going to use has more natural light than this. It isn’t as warm as this one, but I think it looks more like me. I was in front of a window for both shots, but the window faces east so this afternoon shot relied too much on artificial lighting. My biggest issue with the one I chose is background – there is a natural dark spot that looks almost like a shadow. I know I can PS it out, and just might, but I have to wait for my new computer (I hate Gimp….) I’ll flag you down when I post it (most likely Thursday) as I’m interested in what you think. Thanks for the pointers!

Thanks! Yes, that is not a shadow but the natural color of the wall behind me. Later I shifted a little so it wasn’t as visible, but I didn’t like the pictures as much, mostly because of the light but also because I was much too close to the camera so was slightly distorted.

Thanks! Light is wonderful for visual arts of all types, isn’t it? And I can still give credit to the pointers if the “pointy” wants them ;) Almost there!

Thanks. I will write a fuller bio for when needed, this is just a quick blurb. Still not 100% if I’ll use it, but I just might and have the fuller one in reserve. I really need to update my “About” page here too!

I try to see myself as a creative type. If the rest of the world feels the same, well…. ;) Thanks. I do like this photo, but I think the one I chose for the back cover of the book and the bio page is better for that use. I’ll post it here in a few days, right before I hit the “publish” button.
