Years ago the little local telephone company that served only two towns offered a big idea. There was a new thing out there called DSL that allowed T1 speeds (at least down) to houses for a price mere mortals could afford. I jumped on it and had “high speed” access.
Over the years my service improved. Several times I had to upgrade equipment and once even had to rewire part of the telephone infrastructure in my house. But the 15 mbs downstream speed was pretty good, allowing a few devices to stream HD simultaneously.
But life is never one way. Sometimes things need to flow up hill. With video conferencing and other such things of modern life, the 0.5 mbs upstream speed was, well, lets say not sufficient.
Luckily the telephone company that bought out the little local one ran fiber around town last year.
So yesterday I had fiber installed in my house. There are growing pains, of course. For instance, we had to move the service (it’s now by the TV) and the wifi can’t reach my office, since it is through a couple of outside type walls. So I moved my computer to an inconvenient place until I can buy a wifi extender. Also, several of our devices had older wifi built in that wouldn’t connect to the new high-speed wifi so I rushed out and bought some very expensive wifi adapters that has the wanted 11 ac. But it does work very well and video conferencing should be fine instead of painful.
So that’s my smile for the week, moving into the modern era with faster Internet service.
What made you smile this week?
If you haven’t seen it, here is a little background to The Weekly Smile as well as some quick guidelines.

Remember dial-up internet and those modems you put your phone earpiece in? I get all nostalgic thinking about sitting there waiting and waiting for a connection and then for AOL to load just so I could see if I “got mail!”😊 Ahhh, good times.

I get a little nostalgic, but I do not miss AOL! Actually, my wife still has an aol e-mail address – she just kept the old one she had and still uses it.

yep. She does use anything except email, but they do still have a web site/portal.

I love being current with all the technology even if it does have its “growing pains.” Nice smile!

I sometimes hit leading and bleeding edge for a while, but then I settle into it until it is ancient history. The fiber isn’t that new, but it is a lot better than we had!
