Christmas Cards

Christmas tree

Christmas tree

There is a tradition in my family for homemade Christmas cards.  My mom has made cards since well before I was born, maybe even back into the 1950s.  We get a hand made card every year.

I made my own cards for about a decade, though I haven’t done any in quite a while.  Unfortunately I can’t find several of the photos I used, but I did find the majority.  I could only find an already printed card for one year, but I scanned it in.  You can see the whole front of that card at the top of the page.

I always used the pictures of our cats, Bartelby and Claudius, on the back of every card.

I previously put up a post about the photo and the painting based on the photo of the back-lit bulb that appears to be glowing.  These were used two different years.

So here are some of the images I used for my past Christmas cards (click on a picture for detail and to see the “slide show”):

Thanks Sonya! I don’t know if you read the comment below about it, but yes, poor Brady! We tried to get him to pose and he refused. Finally he just laid down and pouted. Such a sad puppy! So I grabbed that shot. It’s one of my favorite of him, that one and the one of my wife holding him when he was about 10 months old.

Hey t – the tree and church one is fav – then the cartoon family! And I read your comment about not sending cards and I almost walked away from it twice – and keep doing it – I actually stopped doing the Xmas letter for about 5 years and had complained get that folks missed it – and continue that as well – however – went from sending 150 cards at the height of our moving around in 2000 – and that was just mailed! To now send about 30 in the mail. One year my French teacher that I keep in touch with added in her card that it would be her last snail mail card and please find her online! But I still send her a card – it does not have to be reciprocal / she is one of the dear 33 (approximately)

Those are some of my favorites as well, though I’m surprised nobody has commented on poor Brady in his Santa costume! Some day I may start again with a limited list. I may or may not make new ones each year and may or may not do the Christmas letter that I sent in about 2/3 of the cards (closer family and friends). I think a lot of people stopped doing them – even at the end of our run we were sending out a lot more than were coming in.

Oh I ❤️ the snag suit one too – so cute and want to scoop him up! And it sounds like your family made customs cards before everyone – Or was this the custom before the card business exploded?

I think it was the custom before the card companies became so huge. I’m not sure, but I know at least some people have always made custom cards.
Brady hated the suit! We tried everything to get him to cooperate. He was having none of it. He finally just laid down on the floor and pouted. That’s when I got the picture – different than we wanted, but, in it’s way, better.

Yes – turned out well and that face – oh ❤️!!
We have some old shots of our dogs with a few costumes – the two. Main ones were Elvis and darth Vader – back in I think 06 or 07 Walmart had a bunch of pet costumes on clearance (from Halloween) and so the boys were little and we bought a. Bunch – but could barely get a photo too!!

I’ve always liked the tree/church photo. That is my house, so i obviously live next to a church. My driveway actually comes out of the church’s parking lot.
If you use paint, stampers and glitter you are/were doing closer to what my mom does. Actually, my wife has just started playing with creating cards and she uses clips of paper, foil, etc. and stamps.

These are great. For 5 years or so now my mom has Madura painting which then gets printed and is send out to a whole lot of people. I personally am a bit bad when it comes to sending out Christmas wishes.

Thanks! I haven’t sent out any new cards in years. It seems almost weird to in this day of email and instant messaging. I know that it is the thought, and that in some ways it is even more important, but it is hard. Good for your mother for doing that! Mine still hand colors dozens (hundreds?) of cards. Not something I could do!
