If We Were Having Coffee – 1/17/2015

Coffee

Hello and welcome! I’ll get you a mug of a very strong French Roast, though we have tea, Hot Cocoa and other warm, nonalcoholic beverages available.  From the picture you may realize I’m on Cape Cod this fine Saturday morning. Thinking of pictures, Prior from Prior House blog made me a great virtual coffee cup for my Cape Cod excursions.

Since this is a travel mug I’ll use it for those Saturdays I’m traveling between NH and the Cape, both going and coming.

This makes three photos for Coffee on Cape Cod. The third is the Beatles Mug collection:

Beatles and Coffee

Beatles and Coffee

This was a very busy week. I don’t remember everything, but here are a few highlights. I mentioned a few weeks ago that I planned on starting to do yoga. On Tuesday I started a beginner’s class.

On Wednesday I went into Boston for a special visit. This is what I told you about last week. OK, I can’t put it off any longer. I saw Neil de Grasse Tyson speak. Better yet, I had backstage passes to actually meet Dr. Tyson. Here is an almost selfie – my phone but somebody else snapped the picture.

me-n-dr-tyson

Just need to say, Dr. Tyson was funny, witty and personable throughout his two hour dialog and one hour Q&A session, even answering hecklers in an engaging manner. If science needs a face and voice, and unfortunately it does, there are few that can provide it as well as he does.

Oh, since I’m posting pictures this weekend I need to put this up again. Everyone who follows me on multiple social media has to be totally sick of this by now, but I think it’s the best selfie I’ve ever taken.

Josie-n-me

Thursday I drove down to the Cape circling Boston on 128 during snow, sleet, ice and junk during Rush Hour. Oh joy. But I got here in one piece and, after working Friday, I can relax. Oh joy!!

On the blogging front, January has continued to be a remarkable month for me as I already have more views than all but three other months and we’re only half way through.

I also decided to join the 1000 Voices Speak for Compassion. The hope is that on February 20 at least 1000 people will blog, tweet, etc about compassion. Hopefully our voices will help counterbalance all of those who blog about hate, extremism and intolerance. Sign up on the Facebook page.

I hope you all had a great week and that next week is even better! Thanks for dropping by and sharing a cup of coffee, or the hot beverage you chose, with me!

Part time Monster, which originated the “If We Were Having Coffee” posts, is now hosting a weekly Weekend Coffee Share. Go over there and join other bloggers for a cup of coffee!

Josie is a funny cat. She’s either in my arms or hiding, there’s little in between. The only way I found I could get her picture is to let her climb up on my shoulders. She’s very cute!

If I had a teacher in high school with an iota of passion for the subject, I might have learned to enjoy it. Instead it was sheer torture. Isn’t it often the case that our early teachers so influence our feelings about a given subject? I’m a bit of a nerd too, Trent, when it comes to history.

oh how cool the way you integrated the mug – travelin’ like that!! and I have no idea as to why I picked a travel mug when I made it -maybe I was thinking of your going back and forth – I dunno – but thx for the mention.
and that selfie – with the cat, I agree – well done –
and for my coffee today – I will take a breakfast blend -(black) and I will take the … um, -I will take the “let it be mug” on the lower right –

what a succinct and varied coffee chat this was this week – :)
(and that is good news – I will have to check out COSMOS)

Thanks for stopping by for coffee. One black breakfast blend in the Let it Be mug coming up. I’m using the Rubber Soul mug myself.
I do like the travel mug you made and will use it if I’m one the road back and forth. It doesn’t happen all the time but occasionally.
I haven’t seen the new Cosmos yet, but I’ve enjoyed the clips I’ve seen.
      Have a good day.

Thanks. That’s my cat Josie in the selfie. Oh, the OTHER selfie. Just some guy. He said he was an astrophysicist or something, but in his presentation he seemed more of a comedian. A very, very smart comedian;)

lol! You look so pleased with yourself in the pic with the gentleman (whom I ignorantly had not heard of!)
My kid probably has – I should ask her really.
Worth all the disruption to normal schedules I am sure :D

That 1000 voices thing sounds like a super initiative! I shall have to mention it on the idiot side of life ;) (remind me…somehow – please- I am so SO groggy right now and am liable to forget by TOMORROW!)

Dr. Tyson is a scientist that gets rock star treatment. Although he’s been in the public eye since the 90s recently he hosted a hugely successful science program on TV, Cosmos, which really boosted his popularity. Ask your daughter and/or Google. And yes, I have no complaints about what it did to my sleep patterns!

You should look into the 1000 Voice thing. Your blog reaches a lot of people so it would be great if you mentioned it. So yes, I’ll bug you about it, I mean remind you about it, later.

Are you still fighting the flu? I know it’s only about 10:30 (2230) but go to bed ;)

In my bed and about to lay the laptop aside..probably. Just been sniffing some eucalyptus oil…sinuses are SHYTE.

I sometimes live in a little nerd world so I was surprised at how many people had never heard of him. I don’t watch TV, so I didn’t see Cosmos in this running. 35 years ago, more or less, Carl Segan hosted the first version of the show and I did watch it. But also, he does most of his publicity work here so he might not be as well known in the UK, though a few people who commented about him are from the UK.
Sorry about the flu :( Traveling always takes energy and being sick just makes it that much worse. Have you used zinc pills? We have something called Zycam. It’s VERY expensive, but it does help shorten colds and flus and lessens the symptoms. Anyway, get your rest.

Now CARL SEGAN I KNOW! :D
AND NOW — it all fits together.

I’m having a hard time picking my favourite photo… The Beatles mugs again, that hilarious photobomb or you and Dr Neil. Very, very cool.
Isn’t it great that science has a celebrity just when we really, really need one to get the sensible messages out there?
Thanks for the coffee. Now I really must run. (Literally – I have 14km to do today.) Stay warm!

I was 95% sure I took the Beatles mug picture for you. You just verified it. I think.

Dr. Tyson is great and makes such a good spokesman for the sciences. It’s hard not to like him when he speaks.

14 K? Pretty good. Have a good run and thanks for joining my coffee hour.

To say I was nervous to meet him would be an understatement, but he was so personable it was hard to be nervous around him. Thanks for stopping by for some coffee.

Wow, you got to sit through an inspiring lecture, and meet the man – that’s an awesome surprise. I’m sure there will be a few pounding coffee mugs as people curse the misfortune of not getting a ticket, but also chorus in joint celebration of your experience ;-) Thanks for the coffee!

I wish I could say, “He wanted to discuss some interesting aspects of the curvature of space around my blog,” but no, there was an auction and we won. But yes, it was a real honor to meet perhaps the most widely recognized living scientist.

I’m hoping the 1000 Voices will be a great success!

My sister posted “jealous! jealous!! Jealous!!!” on the picture on Facebook. I figured you’d be another to feel the same ;) Actually, he is so warm and personable that it is hard to be anything but the same in return.

1000 voice sounds great! I hope there are 10,000!

Great catching up with you. It must’ve been fantastic meeting Dr Tyson. I’ve seen him on TV only and he was interesting to listen to. Has the snow settled where you are ? We are still waiting for ours to arrive though the rest of the UK seems to have had a spot or two. I shall be joining you for a cuppa with the Weekend Coffee Blog Share so see you at the coffee house!

Thanks for stopping by Eloise! Yeah, it was great seeing Dr. Tyson. Of course we only got to meet him for a minute – say hi, shake hands, take pictures, shake hands then go – but the show was very good. We’ve had much less snow than usual this year, but it has been much colder than usual also. Usually, up in NH we’d have a couple of feet on the ground by now. I’d have piles 10 foot tall by the drive. This year there’s less than a couple of inches on the ground and no piles. I’ll see you at your place for coffee later!

Wow, that is a big change. This is the second year we seem to be missing the snow completely in the South East of England. There has been an increase in snow up north, but too far for us to enjoy. Well I’ve got my fingers and toes crossed because they are promising snow tonight (as they have been for the past five days!) and I’m still hoping tomorrow is going to be sparkling white outside! See you later at the coffee house!

Your comment didn’t show up in the new notification, I only saw it in email. Yes, very busy yet fun week. I’ll mention the 1000 Voices from time to time, but there’s no way I can market it quite at your level! I’m hoping it will work out great.

Every little bit helps. I’m sure people pay attention to your blog who have never heard of me.

And now I wonder if I am missing comments. I dislike the new notifications.
