If We Were Having Coffee – 1/10/2015

Morning Coffee

Hi! Welcome to my little coffee hour. Sit down and I’ll grab a mug of strong French Roast, though, as always, there’s tea, cocoa and other warm, nonalcoholic beverages. And believe me, you’ll want something warm as it’s been frigid here. And where’s here? By the picture you may know, if you’ve been to other coffee mornings here, I’m in New Hampshire. Yeah, ignore that Co. Mayo, Ireland bit and concentrate on the McDonald’s Pub, or in in this case, coffee bar.

Today’s “If We Were Having Coffee” should be a special edition since it is a kind of coffee party blog hop called the Weekend Coffee Share, but unfortunately it was pretty boring week here in Trent’s World.

As I said earlier, it is frigid. Thursday morning I woke up to having warm water in one bathroom but no cold in either. The pipes had frozen. Luckily I was telecommuting that day so was able to keep the house warm and continue to run warm water. Finally in the afternoon all of the pipes were cleared. I need to remember to leave water trickling when it gets below zero F/-20 C.

This was a week of getting back to work after some time off. Luckily it’s been pretty slow so there wasn’t much culture shock. This coming week, as more people return, I’ll see the work ramp up even more.

Interestingly my blog has been doing very well this year. Actually, last January was a good month, tripling December 2013 and almost doubling what I’d do in February. The first week of 2015 I had more visits than the two months I blogged in 2013 and more than February 2014. Yes, I know, we aren’t supposed to pay too much attention to the stats, but I am a bit of a numbers nerd and can’t help it.

Thinking of views, I have to admit something awful. Playing around with it I’ve discovered that views from my Verizon tablet don’t count. I use the browser on my Kindle Fire so they do, but I don’t get Wi-Fi in all of the places I go so I’ve had to use the cheap, knock off Android tablet that Verizon “gave” me. I know, TANSTAAFL. Anyway, it has 4-G so I can use it everywhere and have been. In other words, I’ve visited hundreds of sites without showing up as a view. Bad for a numbers nerd.

I put up two reviews of books written by fellow bloggers this week.   I should be putting up a third either during this coming week or early the week after.  My reading time has been shortened greatly with my return to work.  I may also start doing reviews of music by bloggers who have recordings on Amazon.

Next week is going to be a very good week for me but I don’t want to ruin the surprise. It isn’t what anybody here suspects and isn’t going to further my career in any way, just something cool.

Thanks for stopping by for a coffee. I hope you have a great week! Hope to see you next week.

Note – I’ve seen the “Having Coffee” posts several times, I think starting with Part Time Monster and a blog which became Just Gene’O. I also see it every week at Nerd in the Brain and often on Thoughts by Mello-Elo. It seems to be spreading but I don’t have space to list every coffee post I’ve seen.  It’s a feature where the “host” gives an informal talk about their week. This started as a “one-off” for me but I guess I can now say that this is a regular feature of Trent’s World…

Hi Trent. I enjoyed your coffee post which I found through the linky, I think that’s what it’s called. I’m a little uncertain as to how to post that correctly to my blog. I’m blind and can’t see the picture examples that people have put up so I wasn’t sure if you might be able to give me the html code if it’s not too much trouble? I’m about to do my first post on this topic as well and I look forward to reading your past posts as well as future writings. have a good weekend.

I’m not sure if I can be much help since I don’t have the linky thing on my page. Part time Monster is the host of the coffee share. Here is the url for this week’s coffee share: https://parttimemonster.wordpress.com/2015/01/17/weekend-coffee-share-2/ She has a the linky on there. When you click on it (or however you navigate) it will bring up the links of people who have added their pages. There is also a button to “Add a Link” that has three fill in boxes – the first for the url of your coffee post, the second for your name and the third for your email address. If you can’t navigate the linky thing, try leaving a comment on part time monster’s page as she might be able to help you enter the data. If she can’t, send me the url and your email address and I’ll put it in for you. I’m not sure how accessible the linky is.

Nice coffee break Trent :) Just had a cup earlier this morning, reading this now early afternoon EST time. Strangely I’m a numbers geek (although I hated numbers as a kid) but not that in to stats. But I think that’s more so because my stats don’t grow quickly or change much lol. Nothing wrong with it though. That little end of the year update that WP did was cool though.

I’m in Maryland, so of course it’s been cold here too. I resorted to sticking plastic over the windows to keep out some of the draft since our insulation is pretty non-existent. Anyway sending you warm thoughts :)

Hi Candace, I’m glad you could join my little coffee party!

I liked the little numbers thing WP sent out at the end of the year too, but after reading quite a few of them I found them a bit funny. I’m not sure if you saw my response, my “Flying Monkeys” post ;)

Yeah, the whole east coast has been pretty cold. I always put plastic over my windows but got behind this year so they aren’t all done. Sometimes I think my heating bill is bigger than the GNP of some small countries.

Thanks for the warm thoughts! Hope you have a great week.

Thanks for stopping by! My blog is a little less chatty than some so I think I need these little coffee breaks. It got below zero again last night but there were no frozen pipes this time.

Actually, my little adventure coming up isn’t work related. It’s not a huge deal, just something I think is real cool and I hope others do to.

Hi Trent great to meet you ! Although it is nowhere near as cold here as it is where you are ! it is 3 degrees here right now 1am, and tomorrow it should be 7 degrees! Here south of England .. Old England that is! I am glad to hear that you managed to escape burst pipes, have had some experience of that due to freezing temperatures…no damn fun! Look forward to hear your good news! Thanks for the coffee I am off to bed now! Great to meet you! :)

Nice to meet you! It must be well past midnight over there. I once had burst pipes and it was awful. The pipes that froze are plastic so I don’t have to worry too much, though they go into copper. I hope you’re talking about 3 and 7 Celsius, not Fahrenheit. I know in England you no longer use “English Units”, that we’re the only ones still using them.

Knock on wood our pipes haven’t frozen. Thursday we had a windchill factor of below 0. I do enjoy the cold, but it needs to come gradually. Not a 60º day then a 27º day.

Glad to hear that your stats are looking great. We’re all into our stats. Hope you keep trending upward. :)

You’re in DC, right? I know it’s been pretty cold there too. We had -8 F not including the windchill early Thursday. I want at least a few days above freezing… Actually, i think we’ll get it next week.

Yeah, I know we all watch the stats.

If I were having tea, as that is my drink of choice, I would be happy that I had a warm drink in the very cold cold cold cold COLD. Sleeting outside this evening…
Frozen pipes…not fun…geees…hope that is not going to happen here?!
Sounds exciting about next week…. always lovely to have things we can look forward to ;)

Plenty of tea here – I usually have coffee early and then drink tea.

We’ve been in this house 17 years and this is maybe the third or fourth time the pipes have frozen. It hasn’t been above freezing in almost 2 weeks and it was -8 F.

Next weeks event was unexpected but should be cool. We’re going into Boston on a week night so I’ll be -real- tired the next day.

Yes. It seems usually the extreme cold does stay on one side of the Atlantic or the other. It’s like the cold air is almost disk shape and just slides one way or the other off of the pole. Last year we had a cold winter and you, or at least the continent, had a mild one. The year before it was the other way around. Oh no, I’m talking weather again ; )

(I hope you read the corrected version – “without meaning”) – anyway after we “break the ice” and become immersed in the conversation I’m sure it will heat up.

I was going to go into a Door’s tune but thought better of it so the bad pun won out.

My brain has been going too long already today so – not so punny anymore, or maybe it has not got going yet?!
My Son is a master punster… too funny…drives poeple insane with it sometimes – lol.

I hate to rain on your parade but I think we should stop the weather puns. I mean, they often get such frosty reception when told to the wrong person.

A season for everything right? You know – weather is a splendid analogy inducing phenomena. I love weather. Our whole lives revolve around it in way more ways then we realise I am sure. And THAT last one Trent… you like a lightening with your words today!

When I fiirst got a smart phone I sold myself on it so I could check the weather any time, any place. It does effect ones moods and now that we that we have some small prediction, when we think we know what’s going to happen with the weather and something else happens, well, I for one get very crabby….

I’m not really the punster your son is, mostly because I know how they drive some people bonkers, but if I get rolling, well. When I’m writing I can usually come up with words pretty quickly, which is one reason I want to be an author. If we were face to face I’d most likely still be thinking about your first “ice breaker comment” and how I could respond to it while you would be light years beyond that conversation.

Oh well, I’m supposed to be working! It was great chatting :)

have a good day Trent :)

Things in your mind are NEVER all used up or dried up. It sometimes feels that way, but it’s always possible to regain it. It’s like a muscle that needs to be exercised, yet also needs rest on occasion.

It’s nine am here and I happened to be inhaling my second cup while reading your post. Don’t apologise for it, we are all stat nerds, even those who deny it. All except the foodie collectives. They’re too busy stemming and basting to notice.

It’s supper time here so no more coffee for me today – I like to sleep! Every so often I’ll say something about the numbers going down and I’ll get a few people telling me I should ignore them, it’s meaningless. I think you’re right though, we all watch them. I’m assuming it’s Sunday for you – have a great day!

If we were having coffee it would make me realise that in terms of cold, I have no right to complain! This is a mild January in my neck of the woods, though I’m like a bear during hibernation season and I don’t want to step outside too early! I’d maybe quiz you about next weeks surprise, because I’m not the most patient person in the world, but I’m learning the art. Thanks for inviting us to coffee – I enjoyed the visit :-)

Well, it was nice having you for coffee. It was also nice joining you, even though you seemed to be paying more attention to the two year old:)

As far as surprise, you’ll just have to be patient. As they say, patience is a virtue. Actually, it isn’t huge, like winning the lottery or signing on with an agent or anything, but I think it’s cool. Not “cool” temperature wise – that’s downright cold!

      Have a great week!

Bitter cold here in Virginia – temps down to nine degrees in recent nights which requires us to plug in a space heater under the house in the crawl space to prevent those frozen pipes. Read your excellent review of M-R’s book and enjoyed it. Have a nice weekend!

It’s been cold pretty much everywhere east of the Rockies. I have a space heater under my house but I can only use it for short durations. It helped with the pipes.

Thanks for the comments about M-R’s book – yes, it was a great book.

      Have a great weekend!

Got here through the linky, so we know that works! Thanks for transferring the link there.

It’s balmy here in New Orleans—in the 30’s or so—but nothing like quite that cold. As a creature of warmth, I am ready for it to warm back up some again here, too. lol Sounds like the week wasn’t bad, at least, and sometimes boring is better than eventful.

I hope to visit NOLA sometime this year. yeah, I’m sure the 30s is pretty cold down there.

I’ll admit it took me a second to figure out the linky thing. Unfortunately it looks like a couple of people didn’t figure it out. I’ll try to copy and paste to get to their sites.

It’s really a great city. Careful visiting! Lots of people show up for a visit and then just stay. :)

The linky is a little more confusing than I’d like, but I can’t figure out how to simplify it much more. It does get easier the second time or two of using it, to be sure.

I’ve been twice and love it. I have a niece who recently moved to Texas so we want to meet her “half way”. OK, New Orleans is closer to Texas, but there are two of us, so we have to travel twice as far. That’s our logic and we’re sticking with it!
