A New Look for Trent’s World (the Blog)

Trents World Logo

A few months ago I spent a several days experimenting with the look and feel of Trent’s World (the Blog). After a while I settled on an idea I thought was pretty good. I’m now going through Word Press’ Blogging 201 exercises about branding and have decided to tweak my blog’s look a bit.

First, I’m sure you noticed I’m saying “Trent’s World (the Blog)” instead of “Trent’s World Blog”. A few comments about that. Back in the 1990’s I developed a web site, Trent’s World. When I made the blog I decided it should be an extension of the web page. I haven’t updated the web page in years so at this time I haven’t connected them up, but I eventually will. The web page will be for static ideas while the blog will continue as I’ve been using it. Somebody pointed out that “Trent’s World Blog” can easily be taken as a blog about the world, i.e. travel. “Trent’s World (the Blog)” on the other hand specifically tells you that this is a blog about Trent’s world, which is the stuff that goes on between my ears. I had used “(the Blog)” format in my header so changing the site name was a no brainer.

More noticeable may be the new header. Somebody else pointed out that the header looked like something from the 1990s. Well, it was. The image used in the header was the original header for Trent’s World that I made in 1996. After almost 20 years it’s time to change.

I really love my little self-portrait so I wanted to incorporate it. (If you didn’t see the post, the image was a pencil drawing that I painted on the computer.) I also wanted to use the “Dabbler” image. People seem to like it. I’ve used it on 2 posts and both times had a lot of comments. As one person pointed out, it really is about how my blog works. So, I combined the two, making “me” a “planet” or world. Do you like the image? Less 1990s?

I also cleaned up the font a little. Not as artsy, but cleaner. I may change the font on the header later. What do you think? Do you like the header font?

I may make some more changes in the future to the look and feel.

Quick question – I used to have a music player on the right sidebar that allowed you to play some of my music. The problem was it took the site longer to load. Knowing that it takes longer to load, do you like the idea of a music player that is always accessible on my blog?

Let me know what you think!

Thanks Jenn! I don’t think I’ll put the music player on. If I did it would be the type where you choose if you want to listen or not – I’ll never force people to hear my music ; ). Thanks for stopping by.

Indeed… It’s up to you or the owner to do what seems right. I mean, nothing is right if we said, it’s wrong. But like you said, it would take longer to upload… So, you’re the boss. :D Good night, Trent. Tomorrow (or rather today) is another day for moi.

Ahhh me gusta! The header is a much more personal touch and shows your interests without words!

Which font is the header using? I’m a big fan of the fonts Helvetica, Trajan Pro, Rockwell, Typograph Pro, and Myriad Pro. I like the fact that the font is clean :)

I would leave the music player off, as people interested in your blog should be browsing around and find the music anyway!

I’ve been thinking about the design of my blog, but I recently registered a domain and am hosting it with dreamhost, so I’ve been focusing more on that site’s design since I’ll be moving everything over there soon.

But I think everything looks great! Keep up the good work!

Thanks Trent! To tell you the truth, I forget which font I used. It had “modern” in the name ; ) I’m not home now so I can’t check.

      Thanks for the comments.

As a first time viewer of your site, I’d have to say that I really like the drawing that you’ve done in the header. It really goes with what your blog is about and there is just something about it that I like!

Hi Sonya. If you have a second would you mind looking again? I just changed the header a little, making a light background to it, and was wondering if you like it or if i should go back to black. Thanks!

I love the new, updated header!
I also love that you use a theme that views well on mobile. I use mobile devices about 95% of the time for internet so this is something I appreciate.
I’m not a fan of music players. Not even for Musicians. 1. They’re a distraction from your content. 2. They aren’t work/school safe. Nothing says “Hey! I’m not working!” like a sudden burst of music. And 3. As you already mentioned, they slow down site loading.
One thing you might want to look at is your big cloud. There was something already posted by WordPress today about dealing with big clouds. You might want to find that post in your reader. Your cloud is pretty huge on mobile.

Thanks Abigail. The player would only play if you hit the play button – if you look at my “Trent’s Music” page you’ll see they type of thing I’m talking about. But I will most likely leave it off. The tag cloud may go away. I’ve put it up and pulled it off several times. I never look at this on my phone but it isn’t bad on a tablet. I’ll have to look at my phone.

OK, I just checked that out on your Music Page and I think a Non-Autoplaying widget is OK. I was thinking of those kind that autoplay as soon as you hit the site. So with it not being auto play does it still take time to load? Because when I went to that page on my phone right now it loaded instantly, no wait for load time at all. It also plays using my phone (Android). BTW you are a pretty awesome Musician too!

Thanks Abigail! I think it takes a little longer for the page to load. I went to a site and tested it and it seemed to take longer with music, but it could be that the site had my page cached when I tried again. If it downloaded fast on your phone it might be OK. I’ll think about it. Thanks again.

Hi Abigail – I hate to impose on you but you’ve been very helpful here. I just changed the header by putting in a lighter back ground. do you like it or should I go back to black? Thanks!

It’s easier to read because of the contrast but it doesn’t seem quite right to me. I think it’s because of how the grey background oval is brushed in. With your portrait the circle has a definitive cut circle shape to it. Maybe you could do a solid grey oval under the text? Or change the entire background field to grey? But honestly, I didn’t think it was a problem before. It didn’t have a strong contrast but it was readable to me.

I looked at your trentsworld dot com site to see what you had going on there and it is a little dusty in there! I was wondering why you just don’t concentrate all of your efforts on this site and use your domain on here and make this the official Trent’s World? Have you measured out the pros and con’s of doing that?

What, just because it hasn’t been updated in a decade? Actually, I have a lot of stuff hidden behind the scenes – I’ve been using it as my version of cloud storage long before cloud storage existed. What I most likely will do, however, is redirect the home page to here. That way if someone types in the address for Trent’s World they’ll land here. In the future I may (will) want a static web page again and it would be nice if I used one that already existed.

    Hi Trent –

I think your self-portrait is kinda neat. It shows a bit of your personality.

I do most of my blog reading on my desktop. So that means the dark blue font is a bit difficult to see on the black background. On my Android tablet and the WP App, though, it doesn’t make any difference. The header is a standard default font on a white ground.

As for the music – it’s not an important component for me, so if it makes loading a site slower, then that’s a negative.

    Hope this helps!

Thanks Maggie, that does help. I may lighten up the font – it’s very visible on my PC but I understand it is dark on dark. I will most likely leave the player off of the side bar.

I just looked still it and I think it looks better than the black one. It’s not so dark now, which is a good thing.
